School Activity Residentials:

Sit on kayaks are a way for you to learn traditional kayaking skills. We have moved away from the usual centre “Closed cockpit kayak” simply because we have seen that many people find it very intimidating when they capsize. In fact so much so sometime people are reluctant to get into a kayak. They are easy to manoeuvre, relatively stable and are easy to right if they do fall off. The experience of sit on kayaking not only enables you to exercise, but it is great fun, and a great way to experiencing nature.

Sit on kayaking will develop your individual physical co-ordination, communication, working with others and their level of fitness. This is a traditional adventure experience, but we feel enhanced by the use of sit on tops instead of the slightly intimidating closed cockpit kayaks.

Sit on kayaking is a low impact activity that can improve pupils aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility. Specific health benefits include:

  • Improved cardiovascular fitness

  • Increased muscle strength, particularly in the back, arms, shoulders and chest, from moving the paddle
  • Increased torso and leg strength, as the strength to power a kayaks comes mainly from rotating the torso and applying pressure with your legs
  • Reduced risk of wear-and-tear on joints and tissues, since paddling is a low impact activity.

Some other good reasons to paddle include:

  • Kayaking can be peaceful and meditative or can be exhilarating, depending on where and how you do it. Canals are safe and tranquil for participants with little or no experience. Also slow-moving rivers can be used to develop confidence before commencing a full river trip. Sea kayaking can be more challenging for more confident groups/families, once you have developed your techniques in a sheltered harbour.
  • Paddling is a great way to enjoy our waterways, kayaking will help you see places from a different perspective, spot wildlife you’d not see otherwise and enjoy places that many others don’t get to go see.
  • Paddling is also an effective education tool to show the effects of erosion, the need for wild life conservation and the effects of pollution on the environment.
